CARROTS FOR HARE
THE GHOST ROAD COMPANY AND THE POWERHOUSE THEATRE
PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIERE OF
CARROTS FOR HARE
BY CODY HENDERSON

The authentic and historical account of the infamous crimes and adventures of Burke and Hare, a lyrical tragic-comic true-to-life drama in verse, performed by skilled and able players.

This darkly comic tale is the story of the infamous crimes and adventures of William Burke and William Hare in 19th century Edinburgh; Impoverished innkeeper Hare is in dire straits when local pimp and loan shark Stark comes to collect on his debt. Threatening to take the inn from Hare, he decides instead to accept payment of Hare's fiancée, Helen. When a lodger dies, Hare partners with fellow Irishman Burke and sells the corpse to Dr. Knox for dissection. But Stark increases the interest with each visit and forces Hare and Burke to come up with more money… and more corpses. Even as Hare is trying to save Helen, Helen has found an escape route for herself by exchanging sexual favors for medical knowledge from Dr. Knox. Through all the mayhem and madness, however, we discover the humanity in even the darkest souls and how passion and circumstances drive a man to consider acts that would have seemed impossible to him in another time and place.

*Complete with Victorian sideshow claiming to display the actual artifacts and personal affects of Burke, Hare, and their victims!

Produced by The Ghost Road Company in association with the Powerhouse Theatre Company, Carrots for Hare premiered at The Powerhouse Theatre on October 26, 2000 and played through December 3, 2000.
